About Asset Life Matching

Asset Life Matching was developed to help connect investment decisions to the life those assets are meant to support.

John Stoj

Asset Life Matching is a framework created by John Stoj, founder of Verbatim Financial. It grew from a simple belief: a portfolio should not be organized only around abstract measures of risk and return. It should be organized around the real obligations, goals, and choices it is meant to support.

Created by John Stoj

John Stoj is the founder of Verbatim Financial, an independent, flat-fee financial advisory firm. Before becoming an advisor, John worked as a trader, portfolio manager, hedge fund founder, food entrepreneur, and spent several years as a stay-at-home parent.

That combination of institutional investing, advisory work, entrepreneurship, and real life shaped the way he thinks about money. Investments are not merely entries in a portfolio. They are resources meant to support actual lives.

Why this framework exists

Traditional portfolio construction often begins with an allocation: stocks, bonds, cash, and other assets. But an allocation alone does not explain what the money is for. Asset Life Matching begins with the financial plan and then expresses that plan through a portfolio. It asks what obligations the assets may need to support, when those obligations may arise, and how much flexibility exists if life or markets change.

The financial plan should determine the portfolio structure—not the other way around.

Educational first

AssetLifeMatching.com is intended to be the educational home for the framework: essays, examples, diagrams, and tools that help investors and advisors think more clearly about the relationship between assets, liabilities, time, risk, and life. The site is not designed as a traditional advisory sales funnel. Its purpose is to develop and explain the framework clearly.

Connected to real planning

Asset Life Matching is an independent educational project developed by John Stoj, founder of Verbatim Financial and an investment adviser representative of XYPN Invest. John may apply Asset Life Matching principles in his financial planning practice, but Asset Life Matching is not an investment adviser and has no financial, compensation, referral, or commercial relationship with XYPN Invest. XYPN Invest has not sponsored, endorsed, or approved this project.
